Recovering the Lost Art of Assessment

Beyond Memory: Assessing in the Classical Tradition

Assessment is the foundation for the most essential communication that happens between a teacher and student. No wonder that much of this communication has eroded during the tyranny of grades. How can we recover the kinds of assessment that truly foster community between teacher, student, and family? We look to the wisdom of the past in light of the insights we possess today. Modern discoveries in cognitive science regularly uncover the wisdom of the liberal arts tradition. My goal is to make accessible the time-tested methods of assessment from the tradition of classical, Christian education in an approach that honors the past and respects the demands of the present.

What We Can Discover:

– A vision of assessment as relational communication
– Principles of assessment that have endured over the ages
– Practices and methods for incarnating this principled vision in the classroom

Kyle E. Albarado, Ph.D. (ABD)

I’m a classical educator with a background in cognitive science. Over the past decade, I have dedicated myself to work with students to cultivate wisdom and virtue by utilizing the Catholic intellectual tradition, the liberal arts tradition, and cognitive science. The classical education movement over the past years is encouraging, but there is still much work to do. I hope to contribute to and take part in the great conversation in Western Civilization underlying this movement.
